History

In Ribiers, in the Alps, in the south of France, our families have always lived among the sheepfolds and pastures, the orchards and the fields, the gardens and the workshops. Haute Provence has harsh winters and often scorching summers, in this country famous for its lamb, we live in and with nature.

The Giovale family comes from a long line of farmers. Farmers used to hard work, very versatile, and curious about everything. Jean Giovale, Éric’s father, started to deliver the manure from his pastures to the locals of Provence in the early 1960s. His business gradually took shape: the first bags of migon appeared in 1974. Éric, during his business studies in Montpellier, created the OvinAlp brand and innovated by putting this ancient product, migon, recognised for its agronomic qualities « into corks ». In 1988, he constructed the first OvinAlp production unit.

Fertilisation is a great profession. Offering effective agronomic solutions is an even better one. Demanding farmers use OvinAlp fertilising products daily. Winemakers, market gardeners, arboriculturists… they all share the excellence of their results in terms of quality and productivity. They all express their delight in working with products with a sure traceability, and which are healthy and sustainable, coming from a millennia-old tradition. Today, with the help of Mathieu and Bastien (the new generation) and their teams, Éric and Chantal Giovale continue the company’s work while promoting its living tradition.

Raw material

For several decades, OvinAlp has been developing fertilisation solutions known for their physico-chemical and biological properties and the absence of pathogenic germs and polluting micro-elements. We are located in the Hautes-Alpes, in a preserved environment, just steps from the sheep folds and this precious sheep manure, migon. Sheep manure, the basis for the production of OvinAlp’s fertilisers, is the result of extensive and recognised breeding. For the other organic or mineral inputs, OvinAlp certifies the approval, traceability, and strict absence of sludge, slush, or urban compost and their micro-pollutants.

Collection

The sheep in the Alpes of Haute Provence and the Hautes-Alpes only graze on rich alpine pastures or fodder from hay. We find ourselves at the beginning of our story, between stables and alpine pastures, near the sheep, near us, in Sisteron. Sheep manure, a popular amendment due to its physico-chemical properties, exclusively from extensive breeding, a key component in the production of OvinAlp’s specialities, is collected from within an 80km radius around the factory and only from Label Rouge « Sisteron Lamb » (collection agreement with the breeders). This Label, which represents the commitment of the breeders, guarantees the absence of pathogenic germs and polluting micro-organisms. Because nature never lies, OvinAlp is able to certify the origin and quality of its products.

Composting

The first company to hold final health approval, OvinAlp confirms its sustainable development strategy by guaranteeing the effectiveness and innocuity of its products. Certified ISO 14001 for its composting process and platform, OvinAlp develops innovation with new product ranges contributing to agronomic performances as well as to societal and environmental advances, a fundamental strategy in its sustainable development strategy.

Corking

Today, OvinAlp, a company based on tradition, has an ultra-modern production unit, contributing to this truth. With a fully-automated and dust-free factory, OvinAlp is able to guarantee the quality and work of its teams. The ergonomic performance, innocuity, and ecobiological compliance of its specialities are testaments to the quality and safety for the producer and the consumer. Our products are presented in corks measuring 6mm in diameter, cold-extruded to preserve the microbial flora and to guarantee quality disintegration in the soil.

Fertilisation

Truth about the raw materials through a rigorous choice of their compositions and their origins and truth about the quality of the finished products, an elementary approach, but in line with the current concerns of farmers to produce while respecting the environment and consumers. OvinAlp’s research and development team works daily to advance the company through the diversification of its offer with increasingly more effective products and services, as well as the implementation of a rigorous quality approach. A partner of numerous research bodies such as INRA, COMIFER, CIVC Champagne, ARVALIS, AIVB Languedoc Roussillon, IFV, OvinAlp is distinguished by the innovation and quality of the organic products present on the market. OvinAlp also works with several Chambers of Agriculture on various issues, in order to provide farmers with concrete and sustainable solutions. Working towards sustainable fertilisation by committing to the performance of crop production, while contributing to societal and environmental advances, is our objective.

Standardisation & certifications

The quality approach forms part of a continuous improvement dynamic, from the selection of the raw materials to the marketing of our products. The OvinAlp group is a signatory to the UNIFA charter which guarantees, thanks to its regular audits, the perfect transparency of our products in terms of traceability, innocuity, and composition. Sheep manure, the basis for the production of our fertilisers, is the result of extensive and recognised breeding.

Attention to detail and safety requirements constitute the foundations of our quality culture. Certified ISO 14001 for its composting platform, the OvinAlp group demonstrates its mastery and knowledge of the process. This expertise can be seen the excellence of our products. OvinAlp confirms its sustainable development strategy by signing up to the International Environmental Guide SD 21 000.

The ergonomic performance and ecobiological compliance of our specialities are testaments to the quality and safety for the producer and the consumer, guaranteeing harmony between humans and the environment.

The OvinAlp culture is based upon the strong values shared by all members of the group. OvinAlp’s values are anchored in its own name:

O: Optimisation
V: Valuation

French and European companies which produce and market fertilisers from animal by-products, such as slurry or manure, are subject to very strict regulations:

• To be able to create composting and sell products from this composting, the companies must have a specific health approval as set out in article 15 of regulation EC 1069/2009

• To be able to handle it, which is to say mix the manure with other raw materials, companies must have received specific health approval under article 11 of EC regulation 1069/2009

• To be able to store it, they must have a specific health approval as set out in article 11 of regulation EC 1069/2009

Today, OvinAlp is the first French company to have received final health approval for composting (EC regulation 1069/2009)

OvinAlp is involved in the creation of a European joint-trade organisation, ECOFI (European Consortium of the Organic-Based Fertilizer Industry). 14 producers from all over Europe joined forces in 2014 to create a consortium to actively participate in relevant discussions on regulatory developments in order to create a robust European market for their products, defending the quality and innocuity of these fertilising materials.

Traceability

OvinAlp’s quality approach can be easily summarised: the requirement of full traceability from one end of the chain to the other.

• A strict selection of raw materials meeting internal specifications as well as EC regulation 1069/2009 and the UNIFA charter for organic and organic-mineral fertilisers.

Sheep manure, a popular amendment due to its physico-chemical quality, exclusively from extensive breeding, a key component in the production of OvinAlp’s specialities, is collected from within an 80km radius around the factory and only from Label Rouge « Sisteron Lamb » (a collection agreement is concluded with the breeders). This Label, which represents the commitment of the breeders, guarantees the absence of pathogenic germs or micro-elements such as zinc or copper.

• Organic or mineral supplements are carefully selected for their agronomic qualities, and then analysed and stored in a sample library.

• Finished products are sampled by batch number, endorsed, and then kept in the sample library for a year.

OvinAlp certifies the strict absence of sludge, slush, urban composts, and their micropollutants.

All finished products are identified by a batch number and recorded in a sample library.
Regular analyses of the raw materials and finished products are carried out in COFRAC-accredited laboratories.
